So, on the 41st CIFF-2005
we temporally divided, and one of us decides to watch STORIES OF DISENCHANTMENT (Historias del desencanto) by new director Alejandro Valle. The film was terrific, and fantastical. This world was created by God, but manipulated by his prodigal son, Devil, who is not a creator – and this world under his leadership is not for creators. A lot of violence, sadism, perversion, porno, black magic, bloody ghost, etc, etc, etc – but anyway the film is somehow innocent, optimistic and lyrical! The unconsciousness of three characthers: young filmmaker Diego, naïve girl Ximena, and Ainda, mistical women-artist with bat wings – is linked together and leads them to another world. Not this world. Not a Devil’s world. Not a artless world. A world without violence, brute sexuality and betrayal.
A world of real love?..

And the other of us decides to watch GARPASTUM by German-junior.
A lot of Russian people were on this movie, but no one really liked it.
Sort of nice stilisation.
1914.
Two brothers.
Brutality of WWI and revolution.
Russia in fog…
So what’s new?
Didn’t we see this before?
As I said many times: don’t go to the Russian films!..

But SHORTS: ANIMATION NATIONS
With twelve films from seven countries this program celebrates the vibrant state of world animation. We love this, almost all of them.
The life of the headless, limbless, faceless and brainless in Marvelous, Keen Loony Bin (USA, Lizzi Akana). The stunning, detailed visuals of Milch (USA/Russia, Igor Kovalyov). breathe Joyride (USA, John Cernak) shows that there’s so much information you can miss while on a simple bike ride. On their way to commit suicide off the cliff, two members of the pack try to figure out just what the hell is going on in Lemmings (USA, Ron Fleischer). The Moon and the Son (USA, John Canemaker), which explores the emotional terrain of the filmmaker’s relationship with his father. Doubled Up (UK, Samantha Moore) makes an impressionistic exploration of the artist learning she’s pregnant with twins. In Butler (Sweden, Erik Rosenlund), the spark goes out of a couple’s marriage and it’s just another problem for the butler to handle. Clara (Australia,Van Sowerwine) features a disoriented and confused young girl who finds her efforts to make sense of her new world disrupted as she is attacked by flowers and ants invade her home. The Legend of the Scarecrow (Spain, Marco Besas) is a fable of a scarecrow’s life that takes a decidedly unexpected turn once he becomes friends with the birds.
So, may be I’m wrong, but we liked shorts more and more. Some day we’ll watch only shorts!

ANIMAL by Roselyne Bosch’s. This is the story of molecular biologist determined to find a solution to the problem of human aggression. He convinces an incarcerated sociopathic killer to be a part of his top-secret experimental serum designed to neutralize homicidal tendencies. The results are dubious. Then the biologist makes decision to test the serum on himself… So, what is exactly human nature? Can it exist without agression? Have scientists every rights to change this?
Is this SF, or this is already a real life?
Well...

And 12th CUFF-2005
was, as usually, great. We watched FIRECRACKER by Steve Balderson, shoking and dark, with carnival in the middle.
And WHAT I’M LOOKING FOR by Shelly Silver: intimacy and photography. What exactly ia priveci? What is an art? What is a solitude?
And GOOPY SPASMS CARTOON SHOW by Rick Tembles: masturbation, coprophagia and mechanical body. Bold – but, to be honest, a little boring
And CUSHION by Alexander Rojas and I’D RATHER BE DEAD THAN LIVE IN THIS WORLD by Andrew Semans. Almost same thing: two teenagers meet. But how different can it be done! The second is really great, especially final: “I hate this world, I hate my friends, I hate my neiborghs, I hate everything – I love my lover!”
And FIVE MORE MINUTES by Dena Decola, Karin Wandner: two adult women are playing strange play – dauther and mom. Very sour and sweet at same time.
We love it.

We love cinema!!
