Of course, first things first – we mean CUFF and CIFF.

Well, 16th Chicago Underground Film Festival was this year first time in Gene Siskel Film Center and started with IT CAME FROM KUCHAR! by Jennifer Kroot.
We love great bros-legends Mike and George Kuchars, film- and videomakers from the early 50s, very much from the very beginning, from the interview with Scott Trotter on the 2nd CUFF. We love especially SINS OF FLESHAPOIDS and so on. So we were happy to look back on the beginning of CUFF and our life in Chicago, U.S.A.
Then – BEETLE QUEEN CONQUERS TOKYO by Jessika Oreck, about relationship with many-legged beings (that is traditional for Japanis people in their art and philosophie, as we were told) and Dr.Takeshi Yoro, anatomist and author.
But our favorites, as usually, shorts, and between them The Entire Cycle, and especially THE SHUTDOWN by Adam Stafford, half-horror, half-tale experience of child with his deformed father. And EARL by Nick Harvey, the close look on the mature ehhibitionist, who poses nude for art classes and somehow connects his religious beliefs with his perverted sexuality (for example, he masturbates in front of camera like adolescent). And of course, of course, KALENDAR (from THE UKRAINIAN TIME MASHINE PROJECT) by Naomy Uman, living in Ukraine American and understanding Ukrainian poetical spirit. Yes!! We love it! That how it is in Ukraine! Colors and simple food, tea and cookies. Even after Chernobyl, yes!

The 45th Chicago International Film Festival.
OK, may by somebody likes ANTICHRIST by Lars von Trier, but this psychodrama is not our cup of tea. We know that things can go from bad to worse, so what?
We didn’t watch ASTRO BOY, and BERLIN’36, and even CHICAGO OVERCOAT, and even THE MOON INSIDE YOU (oh, we wanted, but…). But we did watch EYES WIDE OPEN (yes!) by Haim Tabakman, about ultraortodox Jews and bisexuality, guilt, Cabbala, love, and radical moments.
And of course we watched HIPSTERS (STILYAGI), heroical musical by Valery Todorovsky: the USSR of 50s or 60s, protagonist’s name is Mels (Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin!), common soviet abbreviation; jazz, drinking, flamboyant clothes, free love, and America as ideal and idol… in dark and dangerous Soviet Union. In Russian with subtitles, sometimes not quite correct, but that’s OK.
Yes, the funny boys and girls really destroyed this terrible empire.
But not completely.
Then, RED CLIFF by John Woo… well, well, well, another House Of Flying Daggers?! Again pseudohistorical drama-fantasy, great landscapes (who said, Chinese people have not enough space?!), civil war, epic battles, corrupted government, weak emperor, combats on the water, spies and tea ceremonies, music and romance, flame and swords, and noble protagonist, who doesn’t want to fight, because he doesn’t like war, but if he must… oh, you will seehim in the battle!
So, be sure: China will conquer all the world, as soon as possible!
And THE REVENANT by Kerry Prior, corpse comedy about dead soldier, who returns to life from the grave, and the merciless politicians, who will send him again in battle _ exactly as in known poem by Brecht…
And short LIFE IS SHORT, in some way the best!
And THE YOUNG VICTORIA by Jean-Marc Vallee, nice lyrical story (oh, yes, queens and princes can be in love too, like everybodu else!).
But what we really wanted to see, was something like CUADECUC-VAMPIR by Pere Portabella with Christofer Lee!

Chicago Filmmakers.
We watched BIRTH OF MAGELLAN by Hollis Frampton, great, but not completely finished epic about the first circumnavigator of the world, this strange diary. That’s much better and mysterious than Greenaway!
Also we watched films by Adele Friedman: CHRISTIAN AND MICHAEL, MARIETTA, NoORTHPORT, ROBERT’S PLACE, SARA AND NORMAN, TREE STUDIOS, CHICAGO TRIPTYCH. Lirical and touching.

Also we were on the Camera-fest, and we watched, for example, THE FORGOTTEN REFUGEES, documentary about the 20th century genocide and exodus of up to 1,000.000 Jews from Arab lands and Iran. That was amasing. And BEAUFORT, quasy doc about Lebanon war, this boys in uniforms, who live on the war and under rockets.

And on 13th Annual European Union Film Festival we watched HELSINKI, FOREVER by Peter von Bagh, history and art, love and crime of one town in Finnish cinema. And then! The Ukrainian Time Machine by Naomy Uman was here! We enjoyed it on the CUFF partially, so we loved it in full! Fillmaker returned to Ukrainian village Legedzine, from where her grandparents emigrated, and still lives in it today!

Also we enjoyed celebrating of publication the book of our author Rex Sexton in Black Walnut Gallery.

And we were in Theatre Zarko on THE SUBLIME BEAUTY OF HANDS and KLOWN KANTOS, puppets and masks, surrealistic images and strong influence of some spiritual forces.

And we watched A.W.O.L, the very last performance of the Elefant-Foot Theater (unfortunately).

And we watched ALICE, ICARUS and GEFESTUS in Lookingglas. The first two are amasing and mythological, warm and precious, especially Daedalus, like our zine (!), but the last one… well, that not theatre, just circus.

Unfortunately we missed Chicago United Film Fetsival, Evanston 1st Annual Film Festival, and Chicago Festival of Israeli Cinema! Next time…

And we want to participate in THE BODY OF MASK in Venice!
